The Review Board is one of the most valuable and unique experiences at SMFA.

This important academic experience is in-line with the school's mission to cultivate artists as intellectuals who are informed by multi-disciplinary practice and, above all, are self-directed.

At Review Boards, you will have an opportunity to engage in an extended discussion about your work and receive valuable feedback.

During the Review Board, a team of faculty and students will consider your work as a whole—as the product of your creative process—rather than as a set of isolated pieces created in different classes. By seeing the semester’s body of work, participants are able to recognize the explicit and implicit relationships between the pieces presented. This ability to understand the work, where the context is determined by the artist, allows Review Board participants to draw out the work's organizing questions, ideas, and aims that might not have been readily apparent.

As a Review Board participant, you will learn to recognize the integration of your research-based practice with your studio projects. The experience will help you to articulate your own artistic direction and questions, to evaluate your needs and achievements, and to plan your own development as an artist.

In any semester where a student is enrolled in 8 or more semester hour units of studio coursework they are required to participate in review boards at the end of the semester.

Learn More about Advising

It’s an opportunity for students and faculty who haven’t seen your work all semester to help you see connections that are already there, but that you aren’t always seeing.
