Emily Gephart is a historian of American art and psychology. She has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the History, Theory and Criticism program, and holds a MA in Art History from Tufts University and a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Oberlin College. Her teaching focus is on the rich intellectual context for all forms of American art and visual culture; she teaches courses on landscape, the transatlantic influence of the Symbolist movement, the dynamic origins of modernism, and art historical interpretive methodologies. She has recently presented her work at conferences including the College Art Association annual meeting, as well as at international symposia, and she has published in Cabinet magazine. Her current research concerns the influence of new scientific approaches to the unconscious mind on American painters in the early 20th century.
