"The Police as Place-Consolidators: The Organizational Amplification of Urban Inequality" – Faculty Talk by Daanika Gordon, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tufts University.

Efforts to understand racial inequality in policing often focus on the micro level, examining the situational dynamics of police-citizen encounters. Daanika Gordon explores racial inequality in policing from another angle, asking how the police organization responds to and further constructs the surrounding urban environment. Using an in-depth case study, Gordon shows how symbolic ideas of place informed policing strategies that eventually amplified disparities in service provision and social control, consolidating the character of an already segregated and unequal landscape.

This talk will be held in conjunction with the exhibition Walls Turned Sideways: Artists Confront the Justice System on view 23 January–19 April at the Aidekman Arts Center, Medford.
