Portrait Painting and Drawing

Portraiture is specific and general, timely and timeless. It informs us about a particular individual while revealing something about us all. The portrait, whether a painting or drawing, involves technical, organizational, spiritual and philosophical concerns basic to any work of art. The initial objective is to produce a physical resemblance to the model, but it is even more important to progress toward the elusive “other” inner life, sometimes at the expense of physical likeness. The class introduces several approaches to help you discover a natural and personal direction. You will use materials such as charcoal, graphite, acrylics, ink washes, water-based paint and oil-based media.

Any materials necessary for the first class meeting will be communicated to enrolled students by the instructor in advance. Otherwise, materials and supplies will be covered in the first class meeting.
