Course Description

This course is equally intended for students interested in a pure digital approach, and those who want to learn how the power of the computer can enhance and streamline a traditional workflow. Students will gain confidence in using software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Corel Painter. Lectures will focus on technical instruction with a digital approach, and will also cover topics such as composition and color theory that can apply to any illustration medium.

Through homework assignments, students will learn the importance of disciplined, practical working methods from concept to sketches to finished art. While the focus of the class will be on understanding and integrating digital tools into the illustrator’s toolbox, the class is open to students who prefer media of any type. In this seminar-style course, students will take part in group critiques, and individual needs will be accommodated.

Please note: During this period of remote learning, access to a computer or other digital device is essential for attending lectures, demonstrations and critiques.  Students who are taking courses in digital media must have access to a computer, and will be asked to purchase a student license to the Adobe Suite.  Tufts is making these licenses available at a greatly reduced price.  Adobe software is not only essential for your courses, but is essential to almost any design or illustration practice. By purchasing this software, you will be able to access it on your own computer at your convenience.  Instructions on purchasing and downloading the software will be sent to you before classes begin.
