Mark Hernandez-Motaghy

Mark Hernandez-Motaghy is an artist and cultural worker with a background in architecture. They are of Mexican and Iranian descent, born in Los Angeles, CA, and currently live and work in Boston, MA. They hold an MS from MIT, where they held a research position at the Media Lab, and a BArch from Syracuse University. Mark has taught at MassArt in the Art Education Department and Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM), as well as at the School for Poetic Computation (SFPC).

Mark’s work has been shown in group and solo presentations at venues such as DXARTS Gallery (Seattle), Westbeth Gallery (New York City), Scollay Square Gallery (Boston City Hall), and SET (London), among others. They have participated in residencies such as SOMA (Mexico City), The School for Poetic Computation (New York City), and Soft Data and Common Wares (Seattle). They also participated in the New Museum incubator, NEW INC, within the Cooperative Studies track.

Outside of and in support of Mark's artistic practice, they work as a writer and editor. Mark is the co-author of Rehearsing Solidarity: Learning from Mutual Aid (2022, Thick Press), which documents how two mutual aid groups—Crown Heights Mutual Aid (CHMA) and Mutual Aid Medford and Somerville (MAMAS)—built social and digital infrastructure during the COVID-19 crisis. Currently, they are the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Fortunately Magazine, a publication exploring the intersections of art, culture, and economic democracy.
