Rebecca Wakim

Artist Biography

Rebecca Wakim is a Lebanese interdisciplinary visual artist. She received her B.A. in Studio Arts from the American University of Beirut in 2019, where her main focus has since been on the unjust political system in Lebanon and the repercussions it has had on its people. She combines reality and philosophic understanding to imagine a utopic future. Her work switches between ceramics, photography, and sculpture as she is constantly in between Lebanon and Boston navigating the different ways to bring forth these raising issues. 

Artist Statement

My work is an exercise of imagination, grounded in the socioeconomic struggle of Lebanon. Launching from the October 2019 revolution, I present my audience with a summarized narrative of events from this historic moment to the present. Through the simple caricature of the tulips on traditional Lebanese coffee cups and tiles, my work comes to life in its symbolism. This brief factual history later evolves into a fictitious narrative whereby Lebanon, and naturally its citizens, emancipate themselves from their criminally corrupt government and the oligarchical ruling class skip the eschatological part of religion and are transported straight to hell, paying the price of their actions. Inspired by the work of Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin and his book Rabelais and His World, this thesis similarly draws from carnivalesque and grotesque theory. Hell is akin to the Romantic grotesque era. On the other hand, Lebanon’s utopian state, now devoid of politicians, evokes folk humor and the celebration of carnivals during the Renaissance. Specifically, carnivals celebrated liberation from the prevailing truth and from the established order marking the suspension of all hierarchical rank, privileges, norms, and prohibitions. The materiality of ceramics and their fragility is analogous to that of Lebanon’s, to the constant efforts put into destroying and rebuilding it. Since my practice embodies the symbolism excavated from domestic objects, I explore the meaning, history, and use of these objects around me that have come to shape my environment. Through these materials, I hope to create a space that feels like a home away from itself.

إنّ عملي الفنّيّ نشاطٌ خياليٌّ يرتبط بالمصاعب الاجتماعيّة والاقتصاديّة الواقعة بلبنان في وقتنا الحاضر. أقدّم  روايةً  تختصر الأحداث التي جرت منذ ثورة تشرين الأوّل عام ٢٠١٩ إلى اليوم، فمن كاريكاتور زهرة التوليب المرسوم على فناجين قهوة لبنانيّة وعلى البلاط يكتسب عملي الفنّي الحياة محمَّلًا بالرمزيّة. هذه الأحداث الواقعيّة تتحوّل لاحقًا إلى رواية خياليّة يتحرّر فيها الشعب اللبنانيّ من الجمهوريّة الفاسدة ويؤخذ كلّ رجال السياسة الى جهنّم. الفكرةُ مستوحاة من عمل الفيلسوف الروسيّ ميخائيل باختين في كتابه راباليس وعالمه، ويعتمد عملي على نظريّة الكارنيفال (carnivalesque) ونظرية الغروتسك (grotesque). يتجسّد الجحيم في عصر الغروتسك الرومانسيّ ، في حين تتمتّع دولة لبنان الطوباويّة الخالية من السياسيّين بروح المرح الشعبيّ والاحتفال بالكرنفالات في عصر النهضة. وهذه الكرنفالات تحتفل  تحديدًا بالتحرّر من الحقيقة السائدة ومن النظام الطاغي المعمول به، وبذلك تتنحّى جانبًا كلّ الرّتب والامتيازات والعادات والمحظورات. إنّ هشاشة السيراميك ما هي إلّا استعارة لواقع لبنان وللمحاولات الكثيرة الساعية لتدميره ثمّ إعادة بنائه. وفي عملي هذا أسكتشف معنى الرموز المستوحاة من بيئتي اللبنانيّة، وأسعى بواسطة هذه الموادّ لإنشاء مكانٍ يرمز إلى الوطن البعيد عن نفسه.
