Felipe López

Biography

Felipe López is a Colombian artist and professor living in Boston, MA, USA. He holds a BA degree in art and an MA in art education from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.  

Trained as a traditional painter and draftsman, Felipe explores subjects such as the nostalgia of images and everyday life, depicting scenarios and human figures, and the structures of power around us through the images of monuments. His body of work combines traditional drawing as the main characteristic, with surfaces, and non-traditional means as a broader idea of drawing.  

His work has been included in more than twenty group exhibitions in different cities around the world, for example in Boston, New York City, Mexico City, Paris, Hamburg; galleries and art fairs in Colombia such as Galería El Museo, and Barcú Art Fair. His works are part of private collections in Colombia, and the United States, and the public collection of the Instituto Municipal de Cultura y Turismo de Cajica.  

Felipe has been awarded the SMFA Dean ́s Research Award recently, the Montague Travel Grant, the Hamburg Exchange Fellowship in 2022, and awards in Colombia such as Colfuturo crédito beca and Opportunity Fund grant. He has served as a painting and drawing professor for the continuing education program of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and other art schools in the country, guest speaker and lecturer for undergraduate classes for several years, as well as a teaching assistant at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Felipe López es un artista colombiano actualmente residiendo en Boston. Realizó sus estudios de pregrado en Artes y es Magister en Educación Artística de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, actualmente estudia el segundo año del Master of Fine Arts en The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) en TUFTS University, Boston.  

Se formó principalmente como pintor y dibujante, su trabajo explora temáticas como la nostalgia de las imágenes y el día a día desde la figuración. También se interesa por las estructuras de poder a través de las imágenes de monumentos. Su obra combina el dibujo tradicional con la exploración de superficies y otros medios como una definición amplia de dibujo.  

Su trabajo ha sido incluido en más de veinte exposiciones colectivas en Boston, New York City, Ciudad de México, Paris, Hamburgo y Bogotá como Pintura Inmortal en Galería El Museo y Spotlights Barcú. Recientemente inauguró su primera exposición individual “Monumento Desmontado” en SMFA, Boston.  

Fue seleccionado recientemente como ganador del Dean’s Research Award, fue escogido como recopiente de la Montague Travel Grant y como el ganador de la ASA Hamburg Fellowship por TUFTS University como artista residente en los estudios de HFBK en Hamburgo Alemania en 2022. Ha sido profesor de educación continua de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, jurado del premio Scholastic Award sección Massachussets, y en el último año Graduate Teaching Assistant en el área de dibujo y en The School of the Museum of Fine Arts .

Artist Statement

One of my biggest concerns is the meaning I give to painting and drawing; I believe they are the way I set relationships between images by creating my own cartography of depictions. I work with drawing, reproductions, and paper as modifiable surfaces; through printing, embossing, shadows, and graphite as means, I aim to build series of concrete images, usually recognizable and figurative.  

My work is an observational exercise that leads to questions related to something specific: a situation, a place, every-day subjects, sometimes tangible objects, usually because these have triggered images from the past or an emotional response close to the world that I experience. Here, I am interested in the nostalgic content of an image, the remembrance and the impression built into the gaze of the observer.  

As a Colombian experiencing processes of migration, I am also drawn by the idea of power structures left over from colonialism, how they relate across the history of our countries, and how their similarities, meanings and ideals linger on as symbols. Using imagery from mostly Colombian colonial monuments as subject matter, linking them with foreign monuments and modifying their image, I wonder about where the power and relevance that they carry resides.  

Artist Statement (Spanish)

Una de mis mayores preocupaciones es la relación que tengo con el dibujo como medio. Lo entiendo como una manera de establecer lazos entre imágenes que se agrupan a manera de cartografía. Trabajo desde el dibujo, las reproducciones y el papel como una superficie modificable que al intervenir es también un medio. Uso el grabado, el grafito y el juego con la luz y la sombra con el fin de construir imágenes concretas, usualmente reconocibles y figurativas.  

Mi trabajo se basa en la observación que conduce a preguntas sobre situaciones o sujetos del común, usualmente porque detonan una respuesta emocional cercana a algo que ya he experimentado o algo que me interesa entender. Estoy interesado en los símbolos de poder que se asocian a nuestra memoria colectiva, en la idea del recuerdo y de la impresión que genera en quien observa, así como en la carga nostálgica de las imágenes.  

Como parte de mi condición actual como migrante encuentro una atracción por la idea de las estructuras de poder residuales del colonialismo, en cómo se desarrollan a través de la historia de nuestros países y en cómo sus similitudes y significados permanecen como símbolos. Uso la imaginería propia de los monumentos coloniales en Colombia en relación con una idea general de monumentos, para así, modificando su imagen preguntarme dónde residen el poder y la relevancia que les hemos otorgado.
