Students Curate Students: OFF-GRID
OFF-GRID is a celebration of work created autonomously and without reliance on perceived systems of normality, creating new utilities and opportunities to make and participate in art as an ever-changing institution. This student-curated exhibition was organized by seven MFA students and Tufts University Art Galleries. Submissions were juried by the MFA curatorial committee including Pardis Alipour, Nick Batzell, Andrew Cain, Jorge Gomez-Gonzalez, Cecilia Karoly-Lister, Juyon Lee, Jana Purington and post-graduate curatorial fellow Cameron Barker.
In addition to existing in a virtual format, OFF-GRID will be on view in-person February 8 - March 5 in the SMFA Atrium. Due to COVID restrictions, the SMFA campus is only open to regular users of the 230 Fenway building this semester.
Curatorial Committee Statement: This year’s Students Curate Students show, OFF-GRID, has shifted in previously unconsidered ways to adjust for a world in which in-person exhibitions are not possible for much of the SMFA community. We are so pleased to offer OFF-GRID as both a physical exhibition in the Weems Atrium and a virtual show on the SMFA website This new format has allowed for greater viewership accessibility and the potential to reach people outside the walls of our small institution. OFF-GRID is an exhibition that reflects the myriad experiences of gridded togetherness, loneliness, identity exploration, physical art-making, and virtual realities that have shaped the past year for all of us. We hope that OFF-GRID offers viewers a sense of fellowship and optimism, and that it provides an opportunity for us all to reconsider how our art can be made and shared.
