Inner Quarters Tessellation
My primary interests focus on people's fluid identities in boundary conditions. I am currently exploring post-colonial transition in modern times through painting, printmaking and ceramic sculptures. My artwork is influenced by my upbringing in a Hanok (the traditional Korean house) with three generations living together. The central motifs are drawn from women's craft usually done in 'Gyubang,' a living place for women in pre-modern era that can be translated as 'inner quarters.' I use the images and patterns as symbols and put them in different contexts to visualize fluidity. Through this process, I want to see what remains unchanged in the end.
