Artist Statement

I am an image-based interdisciplinary artist. My conceptual framework is informed by my intersecting Peruvian-American, Jewish, queer, afab, ailed and passing identities. An inevitable truth of human existence is change. My work addresses transformation within myself, others and society. I use photography to highlight the interconnectedness of the mind and body. I have photographed intimate subject matter including the last years of mi abuela’s life, a dear friend’s gender affirming surgery, and spaces dedicated to body modification. Community is imperative for well-being, personal development, and foundational for change. My socially engaged artistic projects aim to elevate other voices through collaboration and participatory performance. I am interested in using my artwork as a way to reflect on states of political duress, the pressures and confines of gender, and the role that images play in perpetuating standards of beauty, morality and status. Images are widely distributed powerful tools that have historically defined value by idealizing some while disparaging others. The impact of imagery on social constructs such as sex, gender, race, class, religion, ability, nationality and culture is a driving force for my work.
