Pre-College Studio Art Intensive

In partnership with Tufts Pre-College Programs, SMFA at Tufts offers high school artists entering grades 10–12 the opportunity to engage with our interdisciplinary approach to artmaking. The SMFA Studio Art Intensive program is designed to help you elevate your practice, refine your techniques, and create portfolio pieces that are conceptually rich, intentional works of art.  

Led by a team of qualified artists and educators, you will get instruction on advancing technical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and animation. Taught in a highly collaborative manner, you will be encouraged to blur the lines between disciplines as you learn to work with new materials and deepen your understanding of familiar mediums. Group critiques led by instructors, visits to the SMFA at Tufts art library, and field trips to world-renowned museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, will encourage you to think deeply about what it means to make art! 

Program Highlights:

• Expand your art practice with the introduction of new materials and ideas
• Take courses in 2D drawing & painting, 3D sculpture, and digital media/animation
• Refine your approach to making art and expand your creativity
• Receive an individual portfolio review session with an SMFA admissions representative

• Develop polished additions to your art portfolio
• Gain exposure to new mediums and disciplines
• Draw creative inspiration from visits to prestigious Boston art institutions
• Experience life as a collegiate art student
